365 – 2012 – Who is with me?
And we’re back online!
Haaaalleluuujah.
I must admit I’d become all too accustomed to the internet and living without it was hard. I’d almost completely forgotten what it was like to want information and not be able to have it right.that.instance.
Anyway, that’s boring. Lets talk about things that are exciting.
We have a new house. It’s inner city. It’s perfect. We went to Ikea. We spent too much. We’re very happy.
It’s December and it’s only 14 days till Christmas. I am a little bit excited. We have a tree. We have presents made with love. We have little drummer boy on repeat. We’re going to watch Miracle on 34th Street. It’s such a lovely season!
But Christmas isn’t what I came here to write about. There is something even more magical that I am excited about. It’s only 21 days until JANUARY. And January is the month I will commence another 365 days of documenting delight.
You have no idea how eager I am to start.
I have here with me, in hard copy, the two books of my projects from 2010. Bound and heavy they are filled with love and delight. I have never completed anything that makes me so proud.
When I started the project on the first day of 2010 I had no idea what it would become. I had no idea what a beautiful gift I was giving myself. Everyone says “Wow, your kids are going to LOVE this when they’re big” and yes, I am sure they will but the real gift is what it gave me while I was doing it.
Doing the 365 project gave me reason to stop and really SEE my children. Really, really take wonder in this time. To document the delight that is overflowing in motherhood and parenting. To take the time to stop and say – this, this is what I want to remember always.
Since not doing the project I still find little wonders each day but they’re elusive. A smile here, a snuggle there and then they’re gone and at the end of the day I am laying there thinking “What the heck just happened today?”.
Being a mum is often hard. It’s long hours and it’s physically demanding but what’s more than that – it’s very difficult to quantify or see the work we do. Often at the end of the day the only tangible thing I have of hours past is a huge mess and pile of washing.
This project gave me the commitment and time to reflect that – THIS is what I’ve been doing. I’ve been raising these incredible people and here are the little moments and letters of love to prove it. I don’t really need a photo to see my children, but I really need the committment and reason to stop and look for the delight.
This coming year I would like to invite you to complete the project alongside me. To document delight in your own life. If you’re already staring blankly at the screen thinking “I’ll only make it to day 12” then stop thinking that right now! Of course you’ll only make it that far if that’s how far you think you’ll go.
I have a terrible (or excellent depending on how you view it) track record of never completing tasks I set myself to. Furthermore, I am time poor like most mothers and I honestly had no idea if I’d be able to make it to the end of the project. I knew I wanted to try though and – I did.
And you can too. Yes, you can.
What’s more is that I am here to do it with you. If you’re feeling like it’s too much work I am here to tell you to quit whining and carry on. I mean to ecourage you.
If you will be blogging your journey I will add your blog link to my sidebar for fellow ‘Documenting Delighters’ to create a little community to network and leave love on your posts.
Please join our Facebook ‘support’ group to network and encourage with other people doing the project !
So what do you think? Are you in?
Watch either of these and then decide!

I’m in!

Does it have to be photography? I was thinking of keeping a sketch journal to get back in the habit.
And is it just to document your joys in parenting or directly your children?
Glad the move went well too- will have to catch up soon!

Nope, it could be anything Lauren! I just use it to document whatever i feel like but the photo has to be one of the kids – sometimes my descriptions were very general about parenting.

So hard to make the commitment for fear of failure! I’ve been pretty good at taking pictures these last few months so I’m feeling like maybe I can do this. Would love to join along for the ride. Part of me wants my daughter to forget all about these years and ask me “Mom, did I really have cancer?” It would be nice to show her, “Yes sweety, you did. And here is what the year looked like, all 366 days . . . But, look, we had some fun in there too.”
Any tips for sticking to this project? Any tips to avoid failure!?

I’m thinking about doing only a weekly project for this year (just cause I need a break!!!)
Georgia, I noticed you’ve put both your projects into books — what publishing company did you use? I want to do this also but I’m wondering if there’s another option rather than Creative Memories since they’re so expensive? I wasn’t too impressed with Big W and K-mart!

i’m so in:) i’ve done a few similar photo projects and photo books since having my little girl three and a half years ago, but it is only recently that i’ve really started to learn photoshop and indesign to a point where i’m actually efficient at using it – which makes a project like this a lot less daunting! i did attempt a 365 project at the beginning of 2011, but this year has been a bit of a heartbreaker for our little family. and to be completely honest, i found it tough to document so many lows and i gave up. thankfully i still took lots of photos and spent time learning to use my DSLR. and now, after having some time to heal, i’m so, so inspired to start 2012 with a new, exciting project that will ‘document delight’ and give me the basis of another photobook. *love* designing photobooks now, so addictive! can’t wait

I’m going to be joining you but wanted to ask about it. I noticed you have two kids. Do you create two books, one for each child, capturing a pic of each per day or mix it up everyday?
Also with blurb do you have one pic per page or do multiple pics a page.

I have taken the leap! I am a longtime reader (lurker) of yours Georgia, thank you so much for the inspiration, encouragement and support!
My main way of documenting the magic moment in my daughters life is through words, but I love the idea of adding a picture in there too. So……
i just posted my first picture! Which feels good, exciting and slightly scary.
I have realised that it is also going to be a great way of helping me practice more self compassion than judgement (one of my other goals for this year), as I was aware of “not good enough” feelings hovering before I hit the publish button.
Breathe in compassion and self acceptance, breathe out judgement and self-critique.
Thanks again Georgia, you are a Rock Star Mama! Your photos and words are Beauty Full, and I look forward to sharing the journey with you.
Love and magic, Natalie

What a great post about this project. I started in 2010 but gave up halfway through the year (when winter hit and I was working basically full time). This year will bring its own challenges I’m sure – but I’m determined to stick with it and have a whole year of photos to keep at the end of 2012.

Well since following your blog for a few months has been inspiring and woken up my dormant creativity, I’m in. My munchkin turns one at the end of the month so I hope this helps me document his second year a bit better than his first.

What a beautiful project! I so wish I could do something like this, but a photo everyday? I barely remember to purchase dental floss at the supermarket let alone remeber to bring my camera with me or at least to remember to take a picture!! Maybe I will try something like this but not everyday, maybe like a weekly thing that some other commentors mentioned. What I would really like to know, is what is the name of the artist of the first clip, is the song, ‘Little Girl”? What a gorgeous song!!

Ahaha, yes, every day does seem a lot, doesn’t it? Actually, the first year I did this I did it every day. I actually found it to be easy because I knew it was something I just did EVERY DAY. The following year as a break I decided to only take 100 photos instead of 365 and I never even made it to 100 – just because I kept forgetting. Whatever works for you I say!
The song in the first video is ‘Gracie’ by Ben Folds.

I’m a little late but I’m with you! Thanks for the challenge, I’ve had a blast in just the few short days I’ve been working on this project

So glad I stumbled across this post! I’ve been plodding quietly away at my 366 all on my own. Now I don’t feel so lonely anymore

Your blog is so inspiring! I am in. I take tons of pics of my kids already but not every single day. It will be a challenge, but it sounds exciting! I’m late getting started, is that okay? (just stumbled on your blog the other day by way of your sisters gratitude project. What an amazing family you are!) I sent a request to fb also.
I’m so glad to be on board. Isn’t it amazing that you’re in Australia and I’m in California and we are connecting? I love it! I do have a blog (just started it Jan. 1st) and would love to add this project to it. How do you suggest I do that? Make it a separate category? How would I give you the credit? (Sorry, I am new to blogging).

Hi G,
I have stumbled onto your website just recently after a recommendation from your lovely husband to read up about Home Schooling and Water Birth. I would love to do the 366 project! I think I have some catching up to do though… Look forward to getting it all going!

I’m finally on a roll! I love this project. It looked pretty scary when I thought about taking pictures EVERY SINGLE DAY, but it has really pushed me into a whole different world of seeing life.
http://www.hannahgram.com i’d love to be added to your list ^__^
